The Minelab Equinox 800 is a waterproof, multi-frequency all-terrain detector that punches far above its price — and even with the newer Equinox 900 out, it's still the best all-rounder for most detectorists. Short version: if you want one machine that handles parks, beaches, and gold fields without babysitting, this is it.
I've swung the Equinox 800 for a few seasons across wet sand and trashy old parks, and it's the machine I still hand to a friend who says "just tell me what to buy." Here's the honest rundown.

Still the smartest buy-once detector on the market. Learn its menu over a weekend and you'll never need a second machine.
01Specs that actually matter in the field
Runs several frequencies at once instead of one. Low frequencies see deep silver, high frequencies see tiny gold — running them together means you don't have to guess which one today's ground wants. This is the headline feature and the reason the machine costs what it does.
Genuinely submersible, not "rain-resistant." You can wade into surf up to your chest or work a creek bottom without a second thought. Most detectors at this price only waterproof the coil.
Ground balance means the detector tuning out mineralized soil — the iron-rich dirt that makes cheap machines chatter and false. The Equinox does it on its own, so you spend your time swinging instead of fiddling.
Every hit gets a number on screen so you can guess what's down there before you dig. Iron reads low and negative, coins land in a predictable band, and you learn the numbers for your own soil within a few outings.
Light enough for a real three-hour hunt. Weight is the spec nobody checks and everybody regrets — a pound of difference is the difference between finishing a field and going back to the truck.

Skip it if you only ever coin-shoot a dry local park on a tight budget. A Garrett Ace 400 does that job for meaningfully less and gets you in the dirt sooner. Nothing wrong with starting cheaper — just know you'll probably end up here eventually.

- The menu takes a weekend to learn. It is not a turn-on-and-go machine, and pretending otherwise sets beginners up to be frustrated.
- No field battery swap — it's an internal pack you charge over USB. Bring a power bank for all-day hunts.
- The stock 11-inch coil is a lot of coil in tight trashy sites. A smaller coil is a near-mandatory second purchase for old parks.
- Now superseded by the Equinox 900, so new stock is thinning out and you're increasingly shopping the used market.

- Yes — the whole machine is submersible to 10 feet, control box included. Surf hunting and creek work are both fine. Rinse it with fresh water after saltwater and check the coil-ear bolts occasionally.
