The Minelab Equinox 900 is the refreshed version of the best all-round detector of the last decade — better grip, brighter screen, bigger stock coil, and the same Multi-IQ engine underneath. Short version: buy it if the price gap to the 800 is small, because the detecting performance is close enough that the ergonomics decide it.
This is an update, not a revolution. That's not a criticism — the 800 was already the machine to beat, and Minelab sensibly fixed the annoyances rather than reinventing it.

The best all-terrain detector you can buy without stepping into flagship money. Worth the upgrade over the 800 only if the price difference is modest.
01Specs that actually matter in the field
The refined version of the 800's engine — several frequencies at once, so deep silver and tiny gold are both in reach without switching modes. The tuning is cleaner in bad ground than the original, though the difference is subtle in normal dirt.
Fully submersible, control box included. Surf, creeks, and downpours are all fair game.
A slightly bigger, more elliptical stock coil than the 800 shipped with. Better ground coverage and good separation, though tight trashy sites still want a small coil you'll buy separately.
The 800's screen was the most complained-about part of the machine in low light. This one is readable at dawn and dusk, which is when the good hunting happens.
The genuine reason to pick the 900. The handle and armrest geometry are better, and over a three-hour hunt that's more valuable than another half-inch of depth.
A wider ID scale than the 800's, so targets separate into finer bands on screen. It takes a few hunts to relearn the numbers if you're coming from an 800.

Buy it if you're buying new today and the gap to a discounted Equinox 800 is small. You get the same detecting ability with the rough edges sanded off, and it's the version that will have coils and support behind it for years.
Don't upgrade from an 800. The gains are ergonomic and cosmetic, and your money is far better spent on a small coil, a good pinpointer, and more hours in the field.
