Can a Metal Detector Find Meteorites?
Short answer
Yes — most meteorites contain iron and nickel, enough metal to produce a genuine signal. The catch: they read almost exactly like iron junk, so a detector running normal discrimination will reject them along with the nails and scrap. Meteorite hunters run all-metal mode with discrimination off.

01Not every meteorite has metal in it
Meteorites fall into three broad types. Iron meteorites are almost solid iron-nickel and detect extremely well. Stony-iron meteorites are a mix and still detect, though less strongly. Stony meteorites (chondrites) — the most common type to actually fall — contain little to no free metal and are difficult or impossible to find with a standard detector.
In practice, this means a metal detector is a genuinely useful meteorite-hunting tool for the iron and stony-iron types, and close to useless for the stony ones, which have to be found visually instead.
02Why normal settings work against you
A meteorite's iron-nickel content reads in the same low target ID range as rusted iron trash — nails, wire, scrap. Every detector's default discrimination is built to silently reject exactly that range, because in a park or field, it's almost always junk.
That means a detector running its normal park-hunting settings will actively filter meteorites out without you ever hearing a signal. This is the single biggest reason people assume detectors can't find meteorites, when really the setting is just tuned against it.
